because the American Company, having had unfavourable
experience of attempts to do business with one big
English firm (in North China), are very apt to decline
to go on with another big English firm in South China,
unless the latter make everything smooth for them.
I think a hint might usefully be given to Reiss
& Co., that the Government place some importance on
the continuance of the agency for the Texas Oil Compan
with Sanders, Rehders & Co., under their (Reiss & Co's
segis, in HongKong, and hope that nothing may occur
to prevent this.
